Outline For Scripture Union Daily Guide 4 November 2023
From vs.1- 4, Isaiah mourns for Jerusalem. Jerusalem is referred to as “the valley of vision” (v.1). It will be of great interest to you to do a google search to find out the basis for this description. It is like Isaiah saw confused people who had climbed onto their rooftops. Were they shouting out of fear or was it some kind of celebration?
What was really sad about what he saw was that the Jews were captured like cowards without any resistance whatsoever (vs.2-3). What is the quality of people with whom we spend most of our time? They can influence us with their character. The behaviour of Judah towards God was not different from the neighbouring nations. As Judah was attacked (vs.5-14), they did not seek refuge in God. As we battle with plagues and pandemics, who or what is our first hope? Often it is not God. Many of us think of God only when the human wisdom that we trusted has failed.
Shebna was an unfaithful steward who demonstrates the wrong attitude and actions of leaders that Isaiah had consistently condemned. God will not condone such pride and selfish attitude. He deposed him and raised Hilkiah, His servant, in his place.
